Retro computer illustration showing a screen-name sign-up dialog rejecting CoolKid, with xXCoolKid8472Xx on a sticky note and an AOLFOREVER watermark.

Picking a screen name started with something simple like CoolKid. Taken. CoolKid1? Taken. Twenty minutes later you were xXCoolKid8472Xx, like the internet had assigned you a prison number. Then you had to tell somebody your name out loud. “Little x, big X, CoolKid, eight four seven two, big X, little x.” By the time they added you, it was time to get off the computer.
Illustration of a beige mechanical computer mouse being cleaned, with its tracking ball and retaining ring removed, and an AOLFOREVER watermark.

The cursor would start moving like it had somewhere else to be, so you’d flip the mouse over and take the ball out. Inside: three rollers wearing tiny sweaters made entirely of desk lint. Scrape the gunk off, put it back together, and suddenly you were an IT professional. The repair bill was zero dollars and one deeply disgusting fingernail.
Custom retro AOL dial-up graphic joking about making kids wait five minutes before using Wi-Fi.

Lol imagine making kids sit through the AOL connecting screen before they can use the wifi. We did this every day and still came back for more. The service operated solely on a 486 computer and a 200-megabyte hard drive. John Draper, also known as Cap'n Crunch,.....
RANT | WEB & THE E/N SCENE

Lol pretty god damn close. I remember always creating some sort of 90s website whether it was video game cheat codes, southpark, pokemon or whatever I was really feeling at that time. Later evolving into one of the scenes that I loved the most . The E/N (Everything/Nothing) or "blogs". We called them E/N Sites because they consisted of content that was basically "everything" and.....
