Lol apparently bringing the old AOL stuff back to the website wasn’t enough. Now I’m putting it on your phone. I’ve been working on island55, an Android app with the AOLFOREVER look, the chatroom, buddy lists and those IM windows that instantly make you feel like you should be doing homework instead.
It uses your JustinAKAPaste.com account and connects to the site’s chat. An actual dedicated app, with its own screens and controls. Here’s a look at where it’s at so far.
That old Welcome screen feeling
Big icons. Blue title bars. Mail, chat and your buddies right there when you open it. There’s a local forecast option too, because apparently we still need to know what’s happening outside before ignoring it and going into a chatroom.

Chatrooms, buddies and proper IM windows
The room connects to island55 on the website, and the buddy list slides out when you need it. Add people, pull up their profiles and send an IM. Blue name, red name, familiar buttons. You know the deal.

Yes, the scrolling macros are coming too
Faders, scrolling text and macros are part of it. The macros go into the room as actual text, one line at a time, so you can watch the thing draw itself. Because just saying hello was apparently never enough for us lol.

You’ve got mail. Again.
There’s also mail between AOLFOREVER members, profile editing and a member directory. I want this to feel like a little place you sign into and hang out, with the stuff we actually used instead of a screen full of junk.
These are screenshots from the current development build using sample accounts and messages. The app is still being worked on, so some screens and features may change before release. No release date just yet.
What do you guys think?
Would you use this? What’s missing? What old AOL feature absolutely needs to make it in? Leave a comment below and tell me what you think of island55. If something looks off, tell me that too. I’d rather hear it now than after everybody installs it lol.
