A 17-year-old minor residing in Colorado Springs, CO, was charged with violating Colorado State computer crime statutes. The 17-year-old, known throughout the hacker community as “YTCracker” (pronounced “Whitey Cracker”), was charged with one count of computer crime and one count of criminal mischief by compromising and defacing numerous Internet web sites, including DoD web site servers in Boston, MA, and Fort Belvoir, VA. On November 22, 1999, YTCracker claimed responsibility for illegally accessing and defacing a Boston, MA, site maintained by the Defense Contract Management Agency. The following day, the hacker allegedly accessed and defaced a Fort Belvoir, VA, site maintained by the Defense Contract Audit Agency. The number of defacements attributed to this hacker has escalated to over 40 sites, including servers maintained by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management, the Federal Aviation Administration, the New York State Department of Agriculture, the Texas Department of Public Safety, various other state and local government sites, as well as numerous commercial and educational sites. Financial damages incurred are estimated to exceed $25,000. No sensitive or classified systems were compromised.
