The indent trick originally allowed 12 char SNs on AOL 2.7 and presumably would have let 18 char names be made on new AOL’s. However, AOL started double-checking the length in June-July 2000 which is really gay because it prevented many AIMs from being converted on 2.7 as well as longer SNs being made.
