There was nothing more fun then thinking of a bunch of leets to add to a cracker that I was going to start overnight.
I remember everyone had their own PWLs (password lists) from 3200 to 34000 and even larger. (You can find a bunch of the PWL’s on here). It all depended on how much time you wanted to put in cracking your leet.
Some of the best crackers I can recall were CnT, ICC and some other private ones I can’t remember the names. (I’m sure their listed on the site.) These were wild and winsock crackers were way ahead of their time. I can’t 100% remember the rates but some of these were doing 1000 passwords a minute.
That’s how intense these crackers use to be the programmers would lock them down by mac address and hard drive serials. And people would actually go and hex-edit to crack them.
When I was about 13 my parents finally put a computer in my bedroom. Right next to the bed. I would load up a list start it, constantly sleeping with one eye open. The crackers always had options like play a sound on a crack. The minute I heard the noise. I would pop out of bed and hope it was a good account I hit.
The worst was when you were asleep or at school and the cracker froze or you would have a blue screen error.
What a fun time to be around.
